Special SVAHEC Summer 2008 Project for UVM COM students:

TEAM CARE:  Interdisciplinary Student Health Professions

Geriatric Learning Opportunity

This is a two week summer student health professions interdisciplinary geriatric learning opportunity. Students will be connected with two Vermont Medical Preceptors in southern Vermont who are practicing interdisciplinary care of frail, isolated elders. Students will live in the region and acquire skills and knowledge on the complexity and interdisciplinary structure of elder care.

Upon conclusion of the Program, students will be able to answer the following questions:

  • What does it take to keep patients in their homes (clinical psychosocial, community)
  • What challenges do patients, family, and the community face in caring for elders?
  • Why have these services been set up in a community – adult day, senior centers, senior meals, assisted living, other?  How do they address safety and functionality?

For more information contact Susan White at 802-885-2126 or swhite@southernvermontahec.org. Student stipend and housing in southern Vermont is provided by AHEC.

We are also available to support and assist individual student projects, per student interest. The town of Springfield has several programs involving school aged children and healthy choices, physical activity, nutrition and obesity-prevention. If you have an interest in this important topic, please contact Susan White (above email)

or Nancy Lanoue at nlanoue@southernvermontahec.org
